My wife, one-year-old, and myself are going to be moving down to Houston this summer so I can attend South Texas College of Law. Ideally, I would like to be close to my family and limit the amount of travel time I will have to put in; however, I'm not sure about how safe it is downtown. We've found some options there close to the school, but I'm hoping someone will be able to give us some input on whether that would be a good idea or not. Thank you in advance!

Downtown is very safe; however, you do have quite a few homless people asking for money, but they are harmless for the most part.

I'm not sure I would want to live downtown with a kid, but there is a big park (Discovery Green) opening in March.

It is actually pretty safe living in the Montrose and Uptown areas. I would not, however, guarantee anything left on your patio or a carport even ifi it is chained. This includes nice potted plants, bicycles, cars (anything in the interior or trunk), etc. Large amount of "small" property theft in those areas. I lived there for 17 years (recently moved to the burbs) and cannot count how many times my car was broken into (even in a secure parking garage). Also lost two bikes and patio Knick-knacks.

The midtown area is booming the past few years with more and more upscale people moving in which does nothing but make the area safer and more friendly. Not many places for kids to play in downtown proper, unless of course you get a home in Montrose area with a yard. But it is a really nice, up and coming area to live in downtown right now or just on the outskirts in Midtown.

Downtown like much of Houston has the ghetto right next to the most expensive places.

I used to live in Eastwood and one summer when I had a bout of insomnia I took late night bike rides around Eastwood and through Downtown.
I'm still alive and never got mugged so I guess it's safe....

Default Go For It

There are lofts continuing to go up in downtown, and the area is improving. There is a lot of new development that's taking place. If you can get the best deal on a condo or a loft there, then go for it.
