Hi everyone,

My husband is set on moving to Houston from Miami. Our kids are grown, my mother and grandmother have passed and his mother just wants him happy. I want to be around other Cuban-Americans and am looking for the best areas to live in to have some kind of Miami Cuban feel. I want to leave Miami too, it is getting extremely full, expensive, and jobs are tough with low salaries. We were first considering Maryland because my daughter is in Arlington but I have not had any luck with a job in the DMV area. His aunt lives in Texas and he is set on going there. Not to mention he is a high school football coach and everyone knows Texas is a high school football state! Any suggestions on a nice neighborhood where I can talk to people in Cuban language? We were both born in the U.S., our parents are/were from Cubas as all our family, but I still feel the love for all Cuban in my veins. Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks and God Bless!

Most of the Cuban, Puerto Rican and Dominican neighborhoods I’ve found are mostly in the north side. They do exist. They’re just a little harder to find because they’re smaller residential areas.

I’ll do a bit of research and get back here

There isn't a real Cuban neighborhood here. I think the largest population of Cubans live in SW (Alief, Gulfton, to Sugar Land). But you'll probably only really look to SL if you want to move around there. I'd see Erislandy Lara's bus often. The Cuban population surged 10 years ago, but looks like it may have tapered off a bit. The population is noticeable now, there's an obviously bigger Cuban presence, but nothing like you'll see in Miami. Gulfton, I'd say, has the largest concentration of Cubans from what I've noticed. Overall, they're spread out across the city.

These same dynamics also apply to Houston. You also won't find any 'Cuban American' neighborhood here, at least no anywhere close to the scale you're used to.

If by 'Cuban language' you mean Spanish then there are lots of people in Houston who can speak it.

It depends on what you’re referring to. Something like Little Havana, hell no. But there’s certain communities and small neighborhoods, apartment complexes etc

A couple thoughts -

there are certainly Cuban communities in greater houston, but I'm not aware of any areas that specifically promote themselves as the "Cuban Area". I'm guessing that wherever you end up living you won't have any problem finding friendly people with a background like yours, or other interesting backgrounds. Houston isn't nearly as racially/culturally segregated as other big cities in my experience. It's much more based on class. There are quite a few great Cuban restaurants - you could hang out there and make friends easily.

I would recommend that you husband try to lock in a job before moving here. High school football coach is an incredibly competitive field down here. It's almost a political appointment. Unless he's very good friends with a local superintendent or school board member then landing a good coaching job might be impossible for an outsider. You'll likely find yourselves way out in the country working for a smaller school district.

Yea Houston doesn't have a lot of that segregated feel like other cities.
Besides Chinatown, the rest is pretty diverse.
Sure some areas have more of one or the other (races), but generally it's spread out.

You all are amazing! Cuban language is like Spanish slang and it certainly is missed when nobody else around understands it lol! Sugar Land I have heard of and I saw somewhere Cuban presence is seen in Katy? Does anyone know if there are Cuban products in grocery stores?
