By the way, I would agree with the suggestion that you rent for 6 months first. It's a drag to have to pack and move twice, but it's worth it. Houston is so different from east coast cities, you really need to get a feel for where you want to be before you commit.

This. There are a lot of townhomes that are fairly nice in that area. I would use har.com and search 77025 and 77005 areas (more expensive), which are immediately south of Greenway Plaza.

If you have kids (I'm guessing you don't), you probably want to stay north of Braeswood, as the public schools are considered better there. If you don't have kids, you could probably get a nice remodeled ranch home south of Braeswood and north of 610 in the Linkwood area or Knollwood Village. Can also check out Meyerland, which is a little bit further out, but still only about 15 minute drive with traffic.

Doubt you could get new construction close to the Greenway Plaza for under $700k. Be careful, make sure to check which streets flooded during Harvey.

Also, if you don't have kids (or anticipate them) and don't mind having very small to no yard there are plenty of options for 3-4 story town homes in midtown, Montrose, Greenway Plaza, Galleria, Heights areas in the 500-700K range. You will be right where "everything is happening" in those areas and literally right by Greenway Plaza.

Thank you! No kids currently but the school district will definitely be important to us later. Thank you for the advice on renting, we'll do that before committing to a specific area long term.
