Well just to get things started I'm a 26 year old male Hispanic student moving to Houston. I was accepted to both UofH and HBU after finishing my first two years at a jr. college. Yeah I know I'm kind of old but better late than never .

I live in Lufkin Texas and have been going to Houston for years. Mainly I went to car shops and for a night out eating and shopping with friends. Other than that I really don't know the names or which areas are nice in H-town.

I chose these school because they both have quality journalism programs and they are only 1h 40 min away from my family (SFA university is a joke)

I really, really do not want to live on campus if I go to UofH. The place looks like a concrete jungle and isn't in the best part of town. I have heard that if you are willing to commute 10-15 min. you can find a good apartment. Is this true? If so can someone give me the names of some quality (safe) aparments around the UofH campus.

If I go to HBU I may stay on campus as the campus is much nicer and they have good living quarters. Then again I live to stay out late and I don't think my love of taquila, rum, and whiskey will go that well there so maybe an apartment walking distance is a good idea. If anyone knows the name of apartments please let me know. Also any places near HBU where I can grab a drink after class?

I have an apartment in the med center and commute to UH every day. Its barely a 15 minute drive to campus and really close to rice village, downtown, midtown, uptown, etc for a drink. I moved to the area at the beginning of the Fall semester and it was the best decision i ever made. Living on campus is not bad at UH but it might be a little awkward living with a bunch of younger people in their teens and early 20's. good luck with whatever way you decide to go!

I have a friend that told me to look into "the met" in the medical district. I think he said it was an apartment complex next to reliant stadium. Any info? and yeah I can't believe how annoying I must have been at that age because anyone under the age of 23 seems to get me annoyed lol. Thanks for the reply.

haven't looked at clear lake. I talked to adm. for downtown and they do not offer a journalism degree at this time. I'll contact clear lake after the holidays. Thank you.

HBU is only 10 minutes from Uptown. The best place to live on a budget in the area would be along Westheimer. It's only a 10 to 15 minute drive from HBU. They have several apartment complexes that are nice and affordable ($700-$900). The best bars will be in Rice Village which is about 15 to 20 minutes from HBU.

Good luck wherever you decide to go!

Thanks everyone. I'll be in Houston early next week taking tours of the schools and looking for a place. I can't wait to call Houston home. Thanks again.

U of H Clear Lake has a Communication degree (that encompasses journalism, graphics, etc) and it is great. They also have a new masters program -- Digital Media Studies that is very unique. It is a jr./sr. campus so students tend to be a bit older (mid 20's to people with grown families). However, as more people in the area opt to send their kids to community colleges, many more younger ones are now attending UHCL during their jr./sr. years and living at home or in nearby apts. www.uhcl.edu

UH main campus. I didn't care for it, but if you're a sinner, then HBU is probably not the place for you.
