I have never lived on a floor where there was residents above me.

How is the noise level?

Can you hear them walking around?

I lived in a downstairs unit with 10 foot ceilings and rarely heard anything. But in an apartment I lived in briefly, I could hear every word the couple over me said, they started screaming at each other at 3am and the hitting started shortly after. The apt had 8ft ceilings.

I live in a house now but the last apartment I lived in was terrible. I could hear every step of the lady and her kids that lived above me (and most other sounds too). If you are considering moving into someplace with people directly above you I would thoroughly check it out first to see what the noise is going to be like.

I lived in La Tour Fountaine on Fountain View for 6 months, on the first floor where all big dog owners were put, while my house got remodelled. I never heard a peep from anywhere.Lived in Houstonian for a few years, massive concrete helps a lot.

SMU I lived in The Village, and heard noise all the time. Domestic Violence with children nextdoor to boot.

It depends on the building. If you are in a high-rise with concrete floors, you don't hear much of anything. I rented for a short while in the River Oaks Gardens and it was terrible there. Most standard garden-style complexes you can hear stuff. At least the older ones.

If you mean "normal" two-three story buildings, yes, normally you hear a lot in those.

That would be annoying.

So most apartments have noise?

I currently live in a three-level apartment building on the first floor. The lady above me is petite and I can't hear her walking regularly, but sometimes she sounds like a buffalo and/or rearranges her furniture every other day.

I previously lived on the first floor of a two-level garden-style apartment in Montrose, and it was AWful. The joists squeaked with every move and he was also just generally a loud-ass.

I have lived in different places of varying structural age and quality, and there is never complete immunity from it. It's a mixture of the building and the residents, though.

After I sold my house in Ponderosa and moved into the River Oaks Gardens, it was torture for me. When you are accustomed to the privacy of a house, and you can hear people getting out of bed, (along with everything else related to the bedroom), it was very disconcerting.

When I lived in apartments I usually got the top floor or a townhouse layout just to avoid it.
