Hello, We are thinking of moving to Houston. We have several friends in the area, and like what it has to offer. I do have some questions though.

What are the areas we should avoid? I have 3 young kids and want a safe neighborhood with good schools.

Also job market... My husband is a contractor and with the economy slump I am worried about him being able to establish himself. Is there still rebuilding?

I have read many other positive things on this forum as well that have been appealing to me about Houston. I grew up in Kansas, so I am accustomed to flat land with summers in the 110's with 95% humidity! LOL so that doesn't scare me at all...it just gives me an excuse to play in the water! In Oregon it is often way too cold to swim (for me anyway... I wear a coat when it is 60 degrees and Portlanders are in shorts!!)

Are people friendly there, overall?

What is the average cost (rent) for a 3/2 house in a decent area?

Thank you for any info you can provide and for wading through my questions!

Oh one more thing! The fun stuff... How many water parks/family type things are there? Are they affordable? We are a family of 5. Thanks!!

Yes I would definitely check out Katy, preferable "South" Katy, That is South of I-10 and North of FM 1093, A typical 3/2 is going to run you $1400 a month. Great schools and friendly neighborhoods, or for a completely safe shot, try relocating in the "Box"... South of 1-10, North of 1093, and West of the Grand Parkway (99), and East of FM 1463. (Basically the 77494 Zip Code) You will have no problems there!! Good luck!
