I have started disconnecting it from its power pack when not in use, to keep it from staying so hot all the time.

timnwendy...i'll ask the dumb question again: what is this "power pack"?
What you describe above...do you mean you just unplug the black "power" cord from the silver Motorola itself? Or you unplug the black cord's other end (the "big head" that goes into the outlet or power strip)? Does it make a difference as long as power is unplugged?

As for a new modem...any AT&T brick and mortar store has them?

Yes, I'll see how much longer this goes on, then consider a new modem. Tech guy said one that's only a year old shouldn't be "dying" ...though I know there's a your-mileage-may-vary element too.

Yes, only this is necessary to keep it cooler.

I do not do this, but you can if you want, it serves the same purpose.

I believe so, yes. At least the one in Pearland that I went to did.

You have more patience than me! Good luck.

I have at&t dsl as well and we have literally tried everything we are considering of switching to another provider. Our internet will crash at least 15 times a day and we have tried every solution. I have asked friends who have at&t if they have issues and they do. My reccomendation is to switch.

This is old post.
But Frustrated Customer: I also had a LOT of problems with ATT DSL. I have the more expensive white modem they sell, it doesn't get that hot and i still had similar problems. On three occasions, each a few months apart from the other, the internet line went dead altogehter, they did the diagnostics and had to send their men to fix their lines from outside the building, no cost to me -you'd think they'd get it right the first time.
But aside from that, I kept getting dropped DSL connectivity, each usually lasting only a few minutes, but annoying as heck! And soon I noticed a regular pattern on top of the random dropped connectivity: -when I first open IE just after turning on the laptop, there'd be no connectivity, but if i closed IE down and reopen it a minute later, it works almost always.
This went on for about 1.5yrs, (ATT customer service agents were polite, but absolutely useless and I had to call a dozen numbers, each pointng me to another dept.) Anyway, the problem eventually went away on it's own. Not sure what did the trick, but I have VIsta and there are often updates automatically downloaded onto my laptop and I can't help thinking maybe one of the patches did it. Or maybe ATT received so many complaints that they fixed their services. Not sure what your problem is but have you tried to call support? Good luck, I banged my head alot out of frustration while trying to deal with ATT. I would have switched after 1 wk dealing with them, but I wanted my land phone line.

Why not get a friend with a laptop to hook up to your modem, if he can connect with no problems then the problem is with your computer. If not then its the cords and/or the modem or possibly something wrong with the DSL signal itself.

I used to have ATT DSL and in the beginning I had a really crappy modem, I complained long enough and they sent me a new one and I never had a problem again.

I have wireless with U-Verse. Last 6 months or so, I will have an "excellent" signal, but my connection will go down every 2-3 minutes ( I can see that the modem lights from a steady green will switch to blinking yellow) then it will take about a minute to re-gain the connection, and 2-3 minutes later everything starts again. I tried to re-boot the computer, disconnect everything and start again, but that didn't help. It is pointless to have CCTV if the Internet connection is not constantly steady. I did talk with ATT people, but they cannot find out where is the problem.

Yes! That is what I endured for about 1.5yrs. Stupid thing! Luckily, mine went away on its own. (But I did have dead incoming line issues as well, which was a separate issue.)

Maybe I should mention it next time I talk with the ATT "specialists"??

My ATandT DSL has been doing the same thing for two days. A call to tech support yielded a recorded message indicating that they are experiencing intermittent service outages.

I think that's what is going on.

It is, indeed, crappy that you have to buy your own replacement modem now....I'd go elsewhere for service, but unless forced I'll never deal with cable companies again. Kind of limits my options...
