We're relocating to the Pasadena TX area. Rumor has it that the town itself has a nickname of Stinkadena. Are there towns/cities within 15 miles of there which are nicer for living?

Don't really go by the city/town...go by the neighborhood. Pasadena is part of the larger Houston sprawl, and it is a pretty large city itself. You just go from one city to the next. The northern part of Pasadena is closest to the industries that sometimes have an odor. The southern part of Pasadena has some very nice neighborhoods.

The Clear Lake area (to the southeast) has some nice neighborhoods (near NASA) but also lots of traffic. The Pearland area (to the southwest) is growing and has lots of new neighborhoods. Deer Park and LaPorte to the east have all kinds of options.

You will definitely be able to find something that suits your fancy!

(Do a search on the Houston sub-section of this board, as Pasadena is so close to Houston.)

Yes, the Clear Lake area is worth checking out. It's close and easy to get to Pasadena. And it's much cleaner and nicer, you should definitely check it out.

As a general rule of thumb, pretty much everything south of Spencer Highway is newer. Brand new subdivisions and housing developments are sprouting up along Space Center Blvd all the way down back in to the city of Houston (Clear Lake area). From Spencer Hwy north to about Pasadena Blvd is primarily 50s and 60s era middle class neighborhoods--some blue collar, some white collar. However, north of Pasadena Blvd and on up towards the ship channel are lower class neighborhoods and it is here where you're most likely to smell the exhaust and fumes from the refineries and chemical plants.

You almost never smell any of that in southern Pasadena. I don't have any pictures of south Pasadena that I can share but you might consider going to har.com and doing a house search by zip code. Use 77505 and it should give you a general idea of the housing stock in the area.
