The large underused building on the NW corner of the Parkway and Max Luther was built as a warehouse grocery store, but I don't recall the name. Not Food World or Bruno's or Albertson's or Sam's or Costco et al. Later, it became Builder's Square (like a Lowe's or Home Depot).

Gander Mountain was built as a Sam's.

I know the building.

I actually remember shopping at Builders Square during their Liquidation Sale.

Didn't there use to be a Food World next to it?

I want to say, there was a Food World off the parkway at Oakwood, now DISTURBIA and then another down next to Builders Square.
We use to drive past it everyday on our way to school and I remarked at how close both of the Food Worlds were to each
other.

But I do not know what Builders Square was prior to Builders Square.

No, the prices were posted. If you marked it wrong, the cashiers would usually catch it. They were (and often still are) familiar with the prices. Some things had stick-on prices. The meats had prices.
This was before bar codes.
Yeah, now that I think of it, you could pick up a discarded box for free, or pay 5 cents per paper bag, or bring your own. I never liked those stores. The one in Decatur was dimly lit, and it got a reputation for being dirty, with little creatures skittering around. It didn't last long - maybe 5 years or so.

Let's go back to the mid-1970s, when inflation was rampant. You'd root around in the back of the shelf for a can that had a lower price on it - one from, say, yesterday. It wasn't unheard of to see people moving the stickers around. That's why we have those stickers with little slits in the sides - it's hard to pull them off in one piece.

I am almost positive the Builders Square location at N Parkway and Max Luther was a Food World at one time. And the 'Disturbia' place was an Albertson's and Bruno's at different times. When I was a kid Winn Dixie, Kroger, and Food World ran the town. Later Albertson's and Bruno's came along for some competition. But once Wal Mart went super and Publix came in, nearly all the other national chains went away. Only Kroger has survived. Of course the local Star Markets have held their own too. The only other local independent grocers I can think of that are still around are John's Big Brother on Holmes and Holiday Foods (ughh) on Patton Road.

Holiday Foods was orginally an A&P, but now it is something else.

It hasn't been Holiday Foods for awhile.

Did y'all ever have a Cub Foods here? Had 'em in Atlanta back in the early 80's...lots of huge boxes/packages of stuff, and bag-you-own bin foods.

Whoops. My bad.

Holiday Foods is still Holiday Foods.

But it was originally an A&P.
