Limestone County Board of Education considers changing enrollment policy - Huntsville News | WAAYTV.com and ABC 31: Appnews

This will be HUGE for the currently annexed areas of Limestone County and IMO will tremendously help their property values and marketability. There are some great neighborhoods with very affordable homes in the HSV areas of Limestone County, but the biggest complaint is how far away Providence Elementary is from these areas, and the overall state of the school.

Decatur City Schools has listed out-of-city tuition for 2015-2016, AND out-of-county tuition. That hasn't been allowed under the federal court ordered desegregation suit was filed back in the 1970s.

Sounds like a good idea to me. That situation would definitely keep a lot of otherwise-interested people from considering those neighborhoods. Olde Cobblestone is another great Limestone Co neighborhood in HSV city limits, although a lot of people think it's in Madison.

We are very much following this. My daughter has medical issues that we would like to be able to have her closer to home. They amended their policy last year to allow for this, now I just hope the follow through and actually implement it.

I would say, though, in reference to the article, I don't think it should be confusing to my neighbors. It was very clear what school we were zoned for when we purchased the house.

Wait-a-minute - I'm going to give an analogy.

Your family and you own a farm that has an old house on it.
A Walmart is built on land near that old house but off your farm property.
Walmart forces the zoning on that part of your land changed from agricultural to mixed use.
A large family working at a low pay Walmart job starts renting that house from you for a minimal rent of $5 per month.
(Your family agrees because it will limit vandalism, help the poor family, and add a tiny bit of income.)
You then tell your family that you want everyone to pay for the education of the kids that family has.

Unless the Limestone Board of Education shifts every single dime of the education costs of these new students back to the thief cities that appropriated the land, they are abetting the theft and raising the education costs born by rural Limestone residents. I smell payoffs and hidden games at the Board of Education, and it smells like skunk.

The costs of bedroom communities are huge, as they demand a lot of services and don't provide the income from business and major commerce to compensate. The shift of the burden of education from the city that did the annexing of land to the county is unfair, immoral, and should be illegal if it is not already so.

From the Limestone CO policy manual 7/15/2014:

"Policy 6.1.2.b states:
The Board may permit students who do not reside within the Limestone County School District to attend schools within the school system. The Board may establish criteria for admission of non-resident students and may require the payment of tuition a a prerequisite to enrollment. The Board will not provide transportation to and from school or homebound instruction outside the county limits of Limestone County, Alabama."

There will very likely be a cost associated with those who wish to attend.

If that "may" was changed to "will" and specified more, I would be totally fine with it. I recognize that "per student" cost is difficult to quantify and some costs are offset elsewhere. The purpose of any government entity is to make itself larger, more important, more restrictive, and more expensive. Citizens always need to be battling that creep.

They do pay Limestone County taxes and HSV city tax....and they actually pay MORE than HSV City in Madison County. Madison City in Limestone County also pays a higher tax rate than Madison city in Madison County.
