I'm sort of new to the Madison area and I'm looking for a community garden where my family and I can enjoy gardening. Our neighborhood does not allow gardens in the back yard.

For as long as I have lived in the US, I have yet to see "proper community gardens"

Here are some gardens and resources:

The CASA Community Garden is one of the oldest community gardens, volunteer driven in the state of Alabama. The Garden is located at 4725 Bob Wallace Avenue and is a garden that is planted, maintained, harvested and distributed entirely by volunteers. All produce from the garden is delivered to our elderly and homebound clients throughout Madison County.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN!?

At the ::: Lowe Mill Garden::: we work the land in unison, growing larger amount of vegetables, rather than renting out individual plots. It is a more natural and easier approach for the sake of yields and quality.

We use organic, heirloom seeds and locally cultivated starter plants. We use nothing but organic fertilizers and amendments to our soil.

If you want to help out, our general hours are ::::
SUNDAYS 12-5
WEEKDAYS after 5 pm and/or during lunch break 11-2

If it is raining, consider the meet up cancelled.

When you do come, please bring your own drinking water for yourself. There is a restroom on the back dock for your convenience.

We ask that you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE leave your dogs at home when you come to work in the garden. There are many plants that could be damaged by a dog that isn't familiar with the boundaries of our plots.

All ages are certainly welcome, but if you are bringing a child, they must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Currently, all of our spring crops have been planted. The main help we need from volunteers is weeding. If you are unsure of what is a weed versus what is a vegetable is, please be sure to ask one of us.

We ask that you do not harvest anything without the supervision & guidance...

"I'm excited about this park model," said Evans [of TVCGA], who is involved in the Howe Avenue Community Garden just north of downtown.

By her estimate, there are currently about 20 public gardens of varying sizes spread across Huntsville maintained by churches, neighborhood associations, schools and nonprofit groups.

If you want to eat what you plant, it seems that the Lowe Mill garden may be a good choice.

What subdivision prohibits gardens in the back yard? Do a container garden.

....or, did the crafty HOA think of outlawing a driveway hay-bale garden? I'd set one up.

As for Lowe Mill, I know they have a community garden --- is the produce grown designated already - like the CASA gardens produce goes to the CASA clients?

The Arsenal community gardens are big, and easy to access and really are the best option locally, IMHO.
