General John Rossi died in July. Have they released the cause of death? They had the service in early August so his body has been released to the family. Anyone know why it's taking so long?

Suicide by self-inflicted gunshot wound. This according to a JAG USA Officer assigned to the case back then and a family friend.

The real question is: Why? It must have been pretty bad.

Could have been personal reasons, or could have been job stress. I remember some years ago that a 4-star admiral (can't remember his name but I believe he was the CNO at the time) committed suicide in the Washington area, and I heard that the reason was he was wearing an unauthorized medal. I suppose it was a "stolen valor" thing, but I don't believe intentional on his part. To me, that doesn't seem like much of a reason, but I suppose to a high ranking military man it could be.

The JAG officer didn't know, but said that usually at this level it's either an impending arrest or something really bad is about to be exposed about the person. He didn't know which.

FTG is correct about the cause but not the method. In the long run, it doesn't matter ... it's a very sad situation that left an entire family devastated. Everyone that loved him was here for his change of command and to have it end this way is beyond comprehension. I just hope his wife and kids can find some peace eventually.

Unless the man is family to any of us, or committed suicide in a public place impacting the public, I don't think it's anybody's business why or how. People die. Some too early, even if by their own hand. That's life. Move on.

Seriously...he wasn't an elected official either. There is no reason his cause of death would be required to be released.

Had dinner with another USA Captain this evening. This subject came up again because A) the Captain was friends with the General Rossi's son at WP and B) the Captain's boss (a one star soon to be two star) was friends with the general himself.

The Captain stated that the General shot himself, giving some details that I'll leave alone. He didn't know why he did it either.

Just reporting what was told to me by people closer to the situation.

There was also a General in KS who David Carradined himself a couple months ago as well. That didn't get reported out very much as you can probably guess.

Yes....and no. Yes he was a private figure but he was also in a very public role. If there's a problem, and there sure seems to be, with members of the military committing suicide at a rate higher than the general population that has every right to be exposed, addressed and resolved. Is it PTSD? Are we giving members of our military the emotional support they need after being deployed? Are we monitoring these events and seeing if there's a common pattern? Are we intervening before tragedy occurs?

So how about let's not move on and let's get these men and women the treatment and support they need before it's too late.

I doubt there'll be any official publicity about cause or manner of death at this point. That's not uncommon.

September is suicide prevention awareness month. Here's just one of many sources for more about suicide and the military: New VA study finds 20 veterans commit suicide each day
