Biotech industry may be in for slump

Sunday, May 10, 2009 By PATRICIA C. McCARTER
Times Staff Writer patricia.mccarter@htimes.com

But HudsonAlpha founder says optimism is back
According to a 130-page report issued this week by one of the world's largest auditing firms, the U.S. biotech industry will not fare well this year.
In its 23rd annual statement on the industry, Ernst & Young reported that the current financial crisis - marked by a lack of capital and a glut of a fear from investors over anything slightly risky - is threatening biotech's ability to fund the long and expensive process of testing new drugs. Without enough means for research and development, those biotech companies can't get new drugs on the market, meaning they can't make money.

Biotech has outperformed the S&P 500 significantly since last summer, or before the melt down(s).

I disagree and think the next big (epic) boom and bust cycle that makes America so great is coming out of biotech. Time will tell.

I hope there will be a boom. If the biotech industry boom, how will Huntsville handle new growth from this industry and BRAC.

By building more subdivisions and not widening any roads.
By opening more generic meat and three restaurants.
By adding more billboards on the main roads.
By closing more independent mom and pop restaurants.
By purchasing the Washington Redskins and relocating them to Huntsville.
By closing all secular preschools.
By changing the names of main roads at random intersections.
By acquiring, by eminent domain, the Ledges for public housing.
By digging up existing buried power cables and elevating them on poles.
By breaking out Madison, Decatur, and Huntsville into separate City-Data forums.
By laying off 50% of the existing pediatricians.
By designating Memorial Parkway as a "Scenic Route".
By making it illegal for any business to be open on Sunday.
By hosting the 2024 Superbowl.
By changing the tornado siren policy to sound the sirens whenever there is a tornado warning anywhere in Alabama.

even if they had a 20-lane interstate, there would be lots of wrecks on rainy days and days that end in "y"
