These cars are pretty different so why do they have the same name?

first the hyundai genesis sedan is pretty much a luxary car while the coupe is not

secondly most of the time a coupe that is based from a sedan is usually more expensive such as the 3 series, or the accord coupe, or the cl coupe(for s class sedan), benz c class etc. But the genesis coupe base is probably almost 10k under the base price of the sedan.

Also their are no similarities to the cars whatsoever or at least i dont see them.

would it be safer to rename one of these cars something else?

I had a similar observation. The sedan is more highly rated than the coupe overall and more expensive. The two cars share a name but I believe they are separately developed platforms (maybe they share that 3.8 V6 engine)? I think Hyundai would like to do something like Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infiniti but it's hard to justify the cost of a new brand with just 2 models. The genesis name is more prominently displayed than Hyundai on these cars so I'm guessing this is the direction they would like to take.

They can lump them together when it comes time to report sales making it harder for people to armchair critique their success.

They were created to launch a standalone luxury brand which they later decided against, so they both just got named Genesis instead of having the name "Genesis" become like Lexus, Acura and Infiniti are.

Wait...who ever said the Hyundai Genesis is a luxury sedan?! Maybe an upscale sedan but...luxury? Not a chance.

The coupe is built on a shortened version of the same platform.

the genesis, azera, and equus are always marked as luxury cars. I mean i thought upscale was another term for luxury or near it?

I would say near it. I would say the Genesis' biggest competitor is the Chrysler 300 and Toyota Avalon. Big near-luxury sedans from mainstream brands.

Maybe to help people equate the coupe with RWD since the Sedan had it?
