Were any of you surprised by anything you saw/heard about our local elections or other votes nationally?

I'm going to start with something national first. What do you think about the Astrodome referendum in Houston being defeated? This means the Dome will be demolished. I wrote this first because of a new thread I'm going to start which pertains closely.

What do you think about all three contested City Council seats in Idaho Falls going to runoff elections as well as the Blackfoot Mayoral Election? Anything you'd like to see changed in the process? Did voters send a message or messages to those who won or in a runoff election? Other thoughts or observations?

A huge thanks to those who want to make our area better! It's easy to be unhappy with decisions but few invest their time and $, or find donors and make other sacrifices to run for office.

For me, I'm surprised all three Idaho Falls contested City Council seats will be going to runoff elections.

Blackfoot Mayoral race had six candidates which probably contributes to the runoff there. Pocatello voters seemed to be clear in who they wanted to lead with the re-election of Mayor Blad.

My thoughts about the Idaho Falls Mayoral Race will be in the thread about Mayoral races. I believe we saw what I hope isn't a new norm for eastern Idaho's largest city.

I'm glad to see the voters of Butte/Custer County vote to keep struggling Lost Rivers Hospital. It is one of Idaho's Critical Access Hospitals. I've got to learn more about this one.....perhaps Juneau or others know more and can help with additional info.

I'm also glad to see the N. Bingham new library defeated. There is no doubt that library is too small, but vacant buildings in Shelley, including a vacant elementary school, could become a much larger library and even community center for a fraction of the cost.

I'm happy to see change in Ammon's leadership. With Ammon's rapid growth, I think a new mayor serves residents better than the current mayor who has been in office for 13 yrs.

I think Rigby needs a new way to count votes.

In someways part of the local media coverage surprised me the most...........

It's Good to hear The Arrow playing the "Eye of the Tiger" this a.m. It seems appropriate after elections or preparing for runoffs.

Funny, MSR, I have already started a thread on domed stadiums in the General U.S. section!

I was the studio engineer for Perry when she came in to record her commercials. She seemed like a genuine, nice person, so I thought she would win.

I'm funny, pw72, or the timing or other ?

Please feel free to share what you wrote about the Dome here in a new thread and get it started. It doesn't have to be me. We may have had different reasons for thinking of the Dome; however, it's possible we're thinking about the functions, designs or longevity of buildings in a similar way.

I also thought Sharon Parry would win. A person who stands by her principles. At least she'll be on the City Council which some may or may not like. That is why there are only three contested seats not four.

Sharon Parry doesn't back down when she has researched the subject. Who else in Idaho wrote a white paper for review? She does want everything done so those decisions can be defended, if the city were to be sued.

I really, really enjoyed (and appreciated) Sharon Parry's views. Hope she keeps fighting the good fight on City Council and gives it another shot in the next mayoral race. The next few years are very important for the future of Idaho Falls' growth

Couldn't agree more. She's a fighter. She has served this community since they relocated. But, being married to an attorney, she'll also make sure anything she supports is done legally.

Part of what is kind of strange about this election is there have been three males and three females in City Council in I.F. We don't know how that ratio will end after the next $40K run off, if I remember correctly. To me, it said something about electing the best person vs. some cities having totally a male City Council.

And you think we don't know about white papers out here, tmp4 - your comment elsewhere about what people in east ID were like frightened me. I'm sure you know what they say about your former part of the country..... some elements are probably correct in both, but far from the norm in either.

The one Sharon Parry made available about her equality vote and what she didn't think was legally defendable in court.

Maybe they are old and yellow by now.

Look in the Idaho section about the Mayoral Race. If I didn't post them I'll try to find them.

Part of me is GREATLY enjoying sitting at a computer again typing for a while. Part of me says to time to quit. Quite amazingly, actually, I've been able to put that much in from a phone.

Default Sharon Parry's Position Paper

I guess the name changed sometime the last 2 weeks to a position paper. Anyway, here's the position paper link, tmp4. Let me know if it doesn't work. http://freepdfhosting.com/de3cb6a9ef.pdf
