Naturalization is commonly confused with immigration around here...

But it is an interesting concept, where I could have petitioned New Mexico, my state government, for the quicker entry of my wife and stepchildren...

Look up residency laws for individual states. ".... the length of time one must live in that state in order to qualify legally as a state resident."

I am totally confused since this is a thread for Illegal Immigration. You are talking about individual states being able to set up immigration requirements? That doesn't make any sense. Since illegal entry into the US is a national thing, how could states set up a law that would be different? I am one that believes we should man the borders to stop illegal immigration and benefits for citizens of the US should be limited to those that are legal!

I agree with your premise. The problem is that the national policy (as opposed to the national laws) is to allow illegals in anytime they wish.

The states are trying to set up and enforce local laws based on the federal laws that the national government refuses to enforce.

if the federal goverment is not willing to enforce their own federal laws concerning illegal immigration, then states should be allowe dot make their own laws until that time when the federal goverment does in fact enforce its own illegal immigration laws.
