WHY don't those who wish to seek asylum in the US just take an international flight into the US, which would be much safer and cheaper than paying $10,000/each to coyotes/cartels to transport them to the southern border? There is nothing prohibiting those who enter the US or any other country via international airports (or even seaports) from requesting asylum. Case in point: the Saudi teen just recently granted asylum by Canada. At least that way we'd have documented verification of who they are and can more accurately vet them and their claims of persecution in their home country.

Sure you can. All you need for an international flight is to pay the airfare and provide a passport to verify your ID. It's MUCH safer and cheaper than paying coyotes/cartels to get to the southern border.
So here's the thing... if their own home country won't vouch for their ID and issue a passport, how can the US be sure they know the aliens are who they claim to be, or even that their age is what they say it is?
You have to apply for, and get approved for, a visa if you want to fly in. They seem to know that they won't get one. They do the only thing that they can. They try to sneak across the border. Many from Asia or Africa seem to succeed so I'm not sure why others can't do it.

They have no intention of being granted asylum.
What they want to do is take advantage of our laws by requesting asylum, being placed on a long docket for a hearing, being released until their hearing date, and disappearing into America. They know they are not eligible for asylum, and they never intend to leave.

Quite so. In addition, the US has absolutely no information as to their actual identity or age, either, so no background check or vetting can be done. That's how we get 30-year-old illegal aliens enrolled in our public high schools.

Well, to be fair, sometimes a 30-year-old can look like a 15-year-old if that 30-year-old is short.

Because they have to be approved for tourist B1/B2 visa by the US Consulate in their home country first. In order to be approve for a tourist visa, they have to prove to the US consular officer, based on their merits, that they will return back to their country (i.e. proof of money in the bank, proof of business/land ownership, proof of income, etc.)
Very few countries in the world where their citizens can travel to US without a visa or visa waiver program (VWP). Those countries are usually very wealthy, stable/functional government, with a visa denial rate less than 3%. The countries that are not part of VWP need to have visa.
Exactly, just as legal immigrants have to apply for and get approved for legal immigration.
Legal status is not required to apply for asylum. Don't like it, change the rules.
