I read all the, dare I say nice thing all the people in the know, whrite about the so called illegals are being exploited and not being paid a fair wage.So whats a fair wage? The goverment tells us that its $5.85 till the 24 jul.08.$6.25 till 09 and $7.25 there after. Our goverment wants us to live on @$46.00 a day. This is fair as far as our elected officals care.OH! There is no prevision for health care. vacations, sick pay, personal days, or job security. So the way I see it is if you had 2 or 3 of these jobs so you can put food on your table. Not only will there be no work for the Illegals. You would not have the time to respond to this thread just thinking outloud..

I would think a fair wage would mean that if you have one job (and maybe a spouse who has one job), you can afford to rent a decent place, have a decent car, and get food and medical care. You won't have to worry constantly about making the bills.

There's a trend now to have "regional minimum wages". For example, here in Boston (in order to have an apt, get food, etc. - no car), you need $20/hour, at the minimum.

So, you must work two 40-hour jobs!

A fair wage is what the marketplace is willing to pay based on your skillset and demonstrated accomplishments. Nothing more and nothing less.

It depends on what kind of society we want for the USA.

Sure we can become exactly like Mexico and have mostly dirt cheap workers, be an elite society surrounded by lowly servants and serfs willing to work for less than $5 a day but then like Mexico what happens when we find a very large over-abundance of servants and the political instability and instability to our servant-class society? Unlike Mexico, would we have a chump country in which to dump the excess in order to avoid revolution?

Or should Americans want to preserve a large stable middle class kind of society? Where any American can work hard and get ahead?

Wages are a factor of supply and demand, in normal times, as employers compete for workers, they increase wages and/or benefits in order to attract them, but in times of massive uncontrolled immigration, then that balance is disrupted. Corporations believe they can import unlimited numbers of cheap workers in order to keep wages artificially low, so low that the government confiscates money from the taxpayers to give the workers food stamps and free health care.

In times of limited and legal orderly immigration where an employer must actually take financial responsibility and provide the immigrants he brings in, wages adjust to whatever they should be -- workers have the ability to pick and choose, take the employer who offers the best deal, and the employers have the ability to pick and choose. There is an equilibrium, a balance.

Once the doors are opened and boatloads and trailer loads of dirt cheap laborers flood into the country then there is no competition for workers.

Living wage is an unattainable idea.

Think about it, if you raise minimum wage to $13, then the price of goods would go up for almost everything. This would then cause those making $13 an hour not to be able to afford all the newly increased prices for goods, and living wage would raise again. It fuels inflation, and is something that cant happen; its just not possible. The lower group will always struggle no matter how much we raise their wages....its unavoidable.

I have noticed that where minimum wages are low: immigration (both legal and illegal) is tightly controlled; hence the market determining wages.

With de facto uncontrolled immigration: there tends to be more call for a higher minimum wage to protect citizens/green card holders from the hordes of lawbreakers.

Ahh, got it -- just lower the minimum wage, let's say to $0.65, and gas will return to about $0.50 per gallon, and everything else will fall in price accordingly. Damn, and I wasted all that $$$$ and effort in college . . . .

Well, a "fair" wage to the unscrupulous employers of the exploited illegals, is that absolutely lowest wage that an illegal will work for, which then becomes the prevailing wage for labor at that business. For some reason Americans don't want to work for that wage, that is, the lowest wage that illegals will work for. That employer of illegals will then claim that no American workers can be found to work. They can't find any Americans to work so they need an endless supply of cheap illegal labor.

The employers of illegals have been allowed, by our bought off dysfunctional fed gov,to ruin this country, so that these employers of illegals can get cheap SUBSIDIZED illegal labor.
