My wife will be moving to Columbus,IN from Dallas,TX for a 6 month Internship with our 3.5 year old son.

We need to make a decision on whether to transport her Honda Civic (FWD) from Dallas to Columbus OR rent a car in Columbus for 6-ish months.

How is the ice and snow during winter months- Is an AWD required or can she use my FWD civic?

If I have to rent, Are there any options options to rent for 6 months? I checked the car rental companies but they are quoting $900-$1000 per month.

Regards
Nik

Columbus averages 17-20 inches of snow per year. It really isn't much. Maybe a couple of big storms and then some small one inch or less snowfalls each year. Of course, if you aren't used to snow, it could be interesting. AWD is certainly not required. I've spent 38 winters in Indiana and never had AWD. FWD is definitely helpful, though, as RWD can tend to fishtail a lot more. A bigger problem than snow, really, is ice and it doesn't matter if you have RWD, FWD, or AWD, ice is going to send you sliding.

I can't imagine any scenario where renting a car for 6 months would be a cheaper option than driving your own car.

FWD will be fine. Drive slow and leave plenty of room to brake when there is snow or ice.

Shipping a car is expensive. We looked at shipping my son's car a few years ago from Indiana to Phoenix. It was cheaper to drive, pay for a few hotel nights, and buy a plane ticket for me than to ship the car.

Something to consider.

Columbus is pretty flat. It's actually much easier to drive a FWD car in Indiana than in hillier terrain in "warmer" environments during the winter.

I know. I ended up paying $650 to ship the car but I did not have an option to drive considering our itinerary and all the packing we had to do but I would definitely consider it while traveling back to Dallas in March. Thank you
