The great bit.ly morphed to social and communication extension and is awful now. Instead of being able to just copy and paste a link, users now have to go through a few extra steps to get their shortened links.
Bitly’s CEO Peter Stern said the company anticipated the negative reaction: “It’s the response from the vocal minority who are quick to complain about any change. We put a great deal of thought and effort into making the change as minimal as we could, but we recognize that people don’t like change.”
The negative reaction is from MAJORITY of users and the change is NOT minimal.
Actually bit.ly statement: "bitly -shorten, share and track your links" is frightening. Enough of tracking our every move!! Bitly Goes Beyond Link Shortening, But Its Users Are Not Amused | TechCrunch
That great about bit.ly was that you just highlighted the url, clicked on the bit.ly icon and it did the job, then you clicked on "copy" ( didn't need to physically copy the short link) and could paste it in desired destination.
I didn't found any other url shortening program doing it that easy.
Tried xav.cc which is running similar to bit.ly, but it is not shortening every url like bit.ly did.
With the others ( like DFT.BA or ow.ly) you need to copy url, then paste to shortening program, then again copy the result. I mean, it works but in more steps.
I have goo.gl shortener addon in Chrome and it works great, right click a link, hover over the goo.gl menu, click copy to clipboard. Takes me less than 1 second.
If you want a shortened URL of the page you're on, you can click the icon next to your wrench and it will give you options, you can even get a QR code for it.
goo.gl Lite is also available for FF as an add on.
Edit: Works great!!
