FB ran secret psychological experiments on 600,000 users without their awareness, and changed those users' news feeds to highlight either positive or negative posts from their friends.
Their Data Use Policy does give the company broad access to conduct these kinds of experiments
How do you feel about the fact that it's possible your news feed could be manipulated by the company for research?
Does anyone seriously think the news media itself doesn't manipulate public opinion and hence "mood" anyway? Every media source selects the stories it wants to run. Fox runs with one slant, CBS with another, NBC another, and so on. FB is just being open that it is richarding around with your mind.
I don't think posts #2 and #3 are understanding that individual Facebook news feeds are mostly posts from other Facebook users, rather than professional media. Facebook was manipulating whether the posts it put in certain news feeds contained mostly other people's good news or their bad news.
As for how I feel about it, I understand that when I use Facebook, I'm playing in their sandbox. They're optimizing their sandbox for their advertisers, not for my happiness. Ever since the company started manipulating the stories that appear in everyone's news feed a couple of years back, I've had experiences where I'm missing posts by certain people. I don't like that, but I understand that Facebook has ways that I can circumvent it for people whose posts I don't want to miss.

I'm just having trouble comprehending that kind of usage, unless you're obliquely telling us you're not a Facebook member or you never visit the site. The news feed is the core of the Facebook user experience. I don't see how one could use Facebook and not read the news feed. It would be like being a member of City-Data and only reading blogs and DMs.
I don't understand why it's required. I spend time in groups that interest me and check posts by friends. I don't think I've ever gone to the news feeds. They hold no interest for me. If I need the news I turn on the TV or read the newspaper.
If you check stories/pictures/links/videos posted by your friends/groups, or follow interest pages - that's News Feed.
News Feed also includes status updates, app activity and likes.
Those are news from your friends, not a broadcast or published report of events/news.(like TV or newspaper news)
Agreed. And more importantly, they wouldn't care since it's not a big deal.
