I use I.E. out of preference over Edge.
The latest update added a tab for Edge that I can't delete. Also added an unnecessary tab for "New tab" that won't delete, either.
I haven't been able to find out anything about this.
It's not crucial but is annoying. Will be more so if I hit it by mistake.
Anybody have a solution?
There are a couple of other issues, too. Should I uninstall the update (which took about an hour, BTW)

^^^ totally agree. Don't even understand why it was necessary in the first place. What happened to the theory: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" !

Microsoft's mantra lately is more along the lines of "if it ain't broke, break it".

They're trying to replace Explorer with Edge, so you're fighting a losing battle. Even if you're able to uninstall this update, ultimately they will keep pushing you towards Edge.

Of course you don't have to use the Microsoft browser... lots of other choices out here...

I quit using IE because it has sucked for years. Chrome or Firefox for me.

I.E. is the least favorite browser of web developers everywhere, and for plenty of reasons!

I surf with Vivaldi, opera, and safari (iPad) the most, but design mainly to chrome as it's most popularly used, and test my sites in all browsers. The differences I find in that phase range from amusing to seriously annoying.

I would suggest switching or finding another browser to your liking, you will need to do this sooner or later.
