If they are buying shares at $41 a share, and stock is currently sitting at $32. Couldn't I just buy what I can afford right now, and get the guaranteed increase once the deal goes through?
Is this the only real risk if the deal doesn't happen?
I believe that it was halted prior to the market opening. It closed at 32.20 yesterday; opened at 38.81 when it finally started trading today.
As Lowexpectations said, there is never a guarantee that a buyout will go through. I have a good sized position in Tribune Publishing which had an offer from Gannett on Monday at 12.25. It is now trading at around 11.00 as the two CEOs are not handling this well, so there is always the thought that the deal might not go through.
Actually could have pre-market before the stock halted
The close was 32.20, I doubt the news would have been public and still trading there. It's pretty clear this idea was hatched when the news was announced and 32 wasn't a possibility
It looks like there were 15,482 shares traded pre-market with the last at 8:58, before they halted trading. From what I see after a quick look, the public announcement of the deal was at 9:09.
