Trailing stops? Trend line breaks? Moving averages? Percentage below highs?

Take for example a purchase of SHOP, 100 shares at $150 which is now at $450+...IRA so no cap gains ramifications.

100 share position isn't really worth doing anything special.

If, instead, we're talking 50,000 or 100,000 shares -- then https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchange_fund

Sell Covered Calls, slightly out-of-money. ie 21Feb455 @24.91

Why is 100 shares at $450 any different than 50,000 @ 0.90. You're still managing a highly appreciated asset.

OP I think the common answer to this question is if you did not own this stock right now, and you had 45k of uninvested money, would you buy 100 shares right now? If the answer is no, sell some. If the answer is yes, hold or buy more

If you did this with Amazon or Apple you could find that you lost thousands by selling a few years early. The first part of your answer is what do you expect the company to do in the future. The second is to determine if and when to sell and at what price. After that you can us a trailing stop.

Well for 95% of the population I’d say $45,000 is quite a bit for a single position.

I look at the lots and trim the highest priced ones. I always hold my initial lots as they were bought much lower. I figure I can always buy back the most expensive buys but odds are slim I could buy back the lots I bought 4 yrs ago.

I sold 1/3 of my Apple at 220, and now I am kicking myself. At least I still own $1,000 shares, but I lost thousands selling early. In my defense the stock had dropped to 142, 6 months before I sold. Who knew it would break out so fast, definitely not the analysts.
