There are so many lists out there that it is difficult to derive any worth from any of them. I am not familiar with the one from Family Circle, but another that got quite a bit of press a week ago or so is from CNNMoney,
Best Places to Live .
Five of the top 25 cities are located in the twin cities area, two in Kansas side of the Kansas City metro, and one in Iowa; Ames. Having lived in Davenport for many years I would agree that Bettendorf is a good selection for a family to settle in.

I believe the Quad Cities is America's hidden gem. Bettendorf is a small city but with Davenport and the rest of the QCA being awesome, Bettendorf is perfectly sized. Not much of a downtown area in Bettendorf but it's got great schools and people. It has a nice casino downtown I think, I saw a concert of "The Grass Roots" there once.

I love the Bettendorf area. If I ever moved back to Iowa, this would be one of my top choices for relocation. I don't know that I'll move back, though. Life doesn't seem to be taking me in that direction.

A co-worker of mine wants to retire in Ottumwa. I'd relocate to Knoxville but I'm in South Dakota and the idea of paying state income taxes again, especially relatively high ones with all the different brackets... I'm good where I'm at for now, but I must admit Iowa has a nice 4 seasons climate, at least the Southern and Eastern portions.. not so much the NW and northern parts. If they ever make a flat tax rate of 3-4% I'll consider moving.

He must have relatives there otherwise retiring in Ottumwa makes no sense. Has he been there of late? Of all the bigger cities in Iowa, this is the one that you can see was quite nice, but run into the ground since. A packing house town where the packing house has taken it over.
If Knoxville is the alternative site, I'd pick that in a heartbeat. Especially if you're into racing or fishing/boating with Red Rock Lake nearby. Plus, it's much closer to Des Moines.
Can't comment on Bettendorf as I've only been to the Quad Cities twice ever and never really drove around them. It's the one Iowa metro area I've been to the least.

I've read several pieces touting Bettendorf over the last few years. I'm curious if out of the four cities, did it somehow coalesce all the new wealth of the area at some point? Was it always the wealthiest of the four.

It's mostly a bedroom community for the above average income earners in the QCA. No real downtown to speak of, even tho there's a casino down there.

Dont believe those "best cities" lists. Imho, these cities buy their place on those lists. When I was living in Goldsboro, NC. It got listed on Money magazines best cities as did four other cities in NC. Goldsboro was horrible. Terrible schools, locals hated transplants, very low wages, and outsiders had a hard time getting hired.
