Are these in a safe area for a single young professional? Could I go running during the day by myself and feel safe coming home late at night alone? Thanks!

Yes. At night, running around the Philips Hwy area, close by, would not be advised. But if you keep to the actual San Marco neighborhood then there's nothing unusual to worry about.

I would probably be more concerned about petty property crime - especially if I lived in a first floor place. I'm not picking on any particular part of the metro area - I wouldn't feel especially safe living in just about any first floor place anywhere in the metro area that wasn't behind well guarded gates. Especially if I owned an expensive bike (likely that you have one if you're doing triathlons). Heck - when I lived in a first floor rental in Cambridge MA when I was in school - my apartment was broken into at least twice to steal my crummy $10 bike.

Anyway - theft of high end bikes is a "growth industry" these days:

Right, that's good advise.

Also, make sure that you stay away from the Springfield area, whatever you do.

It's full of homeless people, crack houses, and panhandlers. (And at least one gay Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce offical. Not there's anything wrong with that )

San Marco is a very nice part of town. Crime is very low there. Philips Hwy. is more commercial and industrial so more sketchy crimewise.

Here's a crime map website:
