I hear it's a good time. Planning on heading up this weekend. Going to enter my 5 year old in the pirate costume contest and try and eat some seafood.

Any tips on how to best enjoy the festival? We're planning on getting there (relatively) early on Saturday.

Thanks.

Went there last year for the first time........it was pretty cool. Parking was sort of a headache for some. Expect a large crowd! A lot of people love eating at the restaurant by the dock, but there are also plenty of food vendors at the festival as well. There is a shrimp boat that looks like it came right out of the movie, Forest Gump. The festival was well worth going to.

Thanks. We like to drive up and walk down the main street there. I'm guessing parking will be a nightmare. I believe they're running shuttles (ugh!) from the high school. We'll probably just do that as they're closing down most of the downtown area.

Saturday is definitely a good day to start early. We like to go early on Sunday. Parking can be quite bad and the shuttle is a good way to get back and forth. There is parking within walking distance on Atlantic near Central Park. I know it is a drive for you but we have a parade on Thursday night that is really neat, pirates, floats, beads and candy for the children. Have a great time, remember sunscreen and water and patience, the crowds get big!!

From an excerpt:
Catch fantastic bargains during the Merchants Sidewalk Sale all day Friday - the art and antique show doesn't open until Saturday. The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, presented by Publix, officially kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, April 29, when food booths, entertainment and activities open at the riverfront and Kids Fun Zone only. The opening ceremony officially starts the festivities at 6:30 p.m. on the riverfront stage, followed by the Miss Shrimp Festival Scholarship Pageant, music and the annual pirate invasion, with fireworks scheduled at 9:45 p.m.

On Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, May 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., when not feasting on shellfish, visitors can enjoy the works of more than 300 award-winning artists and craftspeople and their creations in watercolor, acrylics, oils, sculpture, metal, photography, pottery and more, all fully juried to qualify for entry into the show. Best of Show will receive a $1,250 cash prize.

The festival also boasts an excellent showing of fine antiques and collectibles, about 75 booths, including furniture, Depression glass, jewelry, crystal and coins. Student artwork from all public and private schools in Nassau County is displayed, with awards for outstanding pieces given by local businesses.

Seafood, shrimp dishes and festival fare abound all weekend, all prepared with a local flair and flavor by dozens of volunteer, civic and nonprofit organizations from Fernandina Beach and surrounding Nassau County. Musical performances by regional and local acts will fill the air with the sounds of jazz, pop, rock, folk and country. Beach music will be provided by the "house band," the ever popular Swingin' Medallions, who will perform on Sunday afternoon.

A "Blessing of the Fleet" and the "Best Decorated Shrimp Boat Parade and Contest" on Sunday will entertain guests at the riverfront stage. Contests include Adult and Little Pirate and Best Beard on Saturday and a Shrimp Ice Cream Eating Contest on Sunday. Entertain the family in the Kids Fun Zone with activities for all ages and entertainment throughout the weekend provided by Rick Hubbard's Kazoobie Show and JuggleSTUFF, among others. Join the YMCA 5-K run on Saturday morning.

The pre-festival Pirate Parade, presented by Residence Inn, Amelia Island, will be held on April 28 at 6 p.m. along Centre Street to the theme of "Shrimping on Island Time," A Celebration of Island Living.

The flea market and art are my favorite part.
We always park downtown at around 8:15am and are none too early.
Some of the art work is pretty cool, we bought some beautiful lithographs the year before last.
Friday/Saturday we'll be in Tally for our son's FSU graduation, but I hope to get back in town Sunday for the end of the flea market, might find some bargains.
