I found this which states a title transfer from a previous Florida title to a new title holder residing in Florida is 75.45, and if coming from an out of state title is 85.75 -- Florida Vehicle Titles

A dealer is telling me that they handle the title transfer for a used Florida car and it will cost me about $400 to transfer the title and another $300 or so in various fees. I'm quite suspicious of these ridiculous fees; if they are true then perhaps I should leave state if this is a taste of things to come living here.

Here is another resource: Florida DHSMV Dealer Licenses

I will potentially be purchasing a car under 2300 pounds, normal passenger/private use vehicle, new plate, first time registering/getting tags in Florida.

We were shocked at the initial cost of registering our cars here in FL. The titling wasn't bad, but first-time registration was stupid-expensive. In the simplest terms, you have to pay an exorbitant one-time fee to drive a vehicle in Florida. So your first registration will be really expensive, then future renewals are cheaper. Multiple cars = multiple one-time fees. Those do transfer though, so pay the one time fee, buy a new car and sell the old one, you're only paying the smaller registration fees and not the one-time fee.

Here's the chart of registration fees: Florida DHSMV Dealer Licenses

Look specifically at the 'New Wheels' $225 fee. I would assume that $300 includes the new wheels and base registration fees and is unavoidable.

To get two adult drivers licenses and register three cars cost us just under $1500. Not a fun day at Ye Olde Tax Collectors Office. I found the info on the DMV site remarkably unhelpful in determining how much it was going to cost us the first time, and just knew it was going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of "eeek!" when we went in.
