My husband is being relocated thru his work and we are moving to Jacksonville soon. I have two middle schoolers still at home and am lookig for a family safe neighborhood to buy a home. He will be working near the international airport and we are looking for a commute no more that 20 min or so. Any ideas would be great. Thanks

Well..........it kinda depends on how much of a house you want, what you want to spend, and what "style" of a neighborhood you want. Family friendly neighborhoods are a dime a dozen in Jax - most are family friendly. Also, most are non-descript, suburban, cookie-cutter type of neighborhoods with no real walkability, next to strip malls and applebees. Some pople love this type of area, I particiularly do not.

There are historic, established, and unique neighborhoods that are family friendly and not in the 'burbs: Riverside, Avondale, San Marco, Murray Hill for sure, with Springfield as a possibility too.

These areas are very walkable (ie, you can walk to good cafes, restauarnts, parks, the river, etc) have unique historic architecture and history, and are centrally located surronding the Downtown area (ie, near museums, concerts, sports venues, the river, festivals, etc)

San Marco is the most expensive generally, though Avondale is about the same. Very nice large homes all well maintained with some very nice parks, the river, and classy commercial areas with in walking distance. Some bungalows too. Very good schools.

Riverside is getting up there in price, situated right next to Avondale. It's a more funky with great parks, the river, and more commerical botiques, cafes, etc with in walking distance. Lots of large homes and bugalows. Good schools.

Murray Hill & Springfield are both up & coming. Murray Hill has mostly smaller homes and bungalows and is not as historic as the other areas. It does have some very nice parks, but it doesn't have as much commerical with-in walking distance. It's right next to Avondale and is known to be up & coming, though much of the hard work has already been done and the great deals aren't there anymore. Good schools.

Springfield is the most historic neighbohood in the city and is reflected in it's archetcure. The area has many nice parks, new dog park, but much like Murray Hill, is lacking right now in commerical places you can walk to. Both areas are developing these, though there is more momentum in Springfield. However, this area is much more rough around the edges still.....it's very common to see a few gorgeous houses next to a couple in the middel of a renovation, next to a couple that haven't been renovated yet.....therefore you can get the most for you money by far. Mostly large houses in this area. Not so good schools. The families here genrally either have thier kids in a magnet program (which is very easy to get in to, where the child goes to a school out of thier zone) or a private school. Most predict this area will be VERY nice in 10 years as it has improved rapidly.

All these neighborhoods have strong community organizations, especially Riverside, Avondale, and Springfield.

The Yulee area would be about 25 minutes from the airport, but I'm not well-informed about the area. Any C-D Jax posters here who can give a better insight about Yulee to the OP?

.......and new development there too. Developments popped up in Yulee like there did everywhere else here in the past few years. The same developers that were building in Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties were building in Yulee - same floor plans and everything (only for a lot less money). Still rural though .
