Just thought I'd share this. I'm not in any way affiliated with the festival, but it looks like it will be fun and since this is its' first year, some people may not have heard about it yet:

Jax Irish Fest 2007
Saturday, April 28th (this coming Sat) all day 11am - 11pm
@ Jacksonville Fairgrounds

Tons of Irish music, traditional and modern, traditional irish dance, a comedian from Ireland, food & drink, vendors, etc.

Tickets are $20 at the gate, but $15 if you buy ahead of time.

The website is: jaxirishfest.com

I used to love going to the Scottish Highland Festival, but haven't been since it moved out to Green Cove, so I'm really looking forward to this one and hope it's sucessful !

Default Loved the festival!

Cil, you need to go next year! Tip: Bring a folding lawnchair, otherwise you have to sit in the grass or on the bleachers (I forgot to bring one).

It was a really nice event. It was bigger than I expected for a 1st year event, it definitely surpassed my expectations. Plenty of vendors and food and more entertainment than I could watch. It was all done very professionally, ran smoothly, and was very peaceful and friendly.

There were 3 entertainment areas - a small stage near the entrance, a bigger main stage on the big field, and an indoor air-conditioned space for the dancers and the comedian...good thing too- those girls danced all day! They needed the AC.

It ran from 11am to 11pm, but we left around 7pm. Some of my party had been doing a bit too much whiskey-tasting...ahem.

It was very family-friendly, lots of kids running around. Cool t-shirts (got some Irish Surf Culture gear...great guys!), UNF was there promoting their Irish Studies program (wish I had time to stop by!), the New World Celts were there too (they promote Celtic History). Lots of celtic jewelry and housewares.

The food was delish - the fish and chips from Cameron's were the best I've had in a while. Others in my group got corned beef and cabbage from Shannon's. Guinness was $5...not bad.

Of course, it was all about the music. My favorite was Rathkeltair, didn't get a chance to see Flogging Molly - the headliner.

All in all, a really well-produced event...if they did this well the first year, I imagine this will be a huge event in a few years time.

I'm going to try to post a few pics here...couldn't find any instructions on posting pics on this forum, so I'm hoping it will take an HTML tag, here goes...

Henri's Notions on the main stage...

It seems to me that there are a lot of Irish people in Jacksonville. the 2005 census showed around 157,007 people of Irish decent in the jax area.

There were a lot there yesterday...even heard a few brogues (irish accents)!

I don't know of any irish-intensive neighborhoods in Jax (like there are in Boston, for example)...maybe everyone is spread out?
