Dress well, make sure you know the company interviewing you fairly well. The products they make, their history, whatever you can get.

Many people we interview have no idea of these two, and they never get far.

I should elaborate. Dress well means a suit, at the very least should be taken to a seamstress so she can make adjustments to the jacket and pants. Wear a red or blue tie, those colors convey competence (ever see Obama or Bush in other colored ties? Rarely if ever). Wear well polished and clean shoes with matching socks. Don't overdo it with a pocket square, tie tack, or other accessories. Also, if you have a nice watch wear it, I have a couple Movados that honestly go great and accent any suit.

And leave your phone in the car. If an interviewee's cell phone goes off (which happens) I always tell them to answer it. It doesn't matter how they react at that point, they probably lost their chance. I don't care if your grandmother is in the hospital. I'm asking a half hour to an hour from you, you can be disconnected for that long - I know I am, and I'm probably more busy, and honestly have more important things going on right now than the person that is interviewing.

(1) Research the company.

(2) If the employment posting is looking for many years of experience with software or specific training that is going to (likely) eliminate 90% of those who apply anyway, but you have it, and know odds are not all finalists will have it, re-iterate to the direct supervisor and any other managers who see you how prudent it was for them to list this requirement.

Half the job of getting a job is to reduce the pool of candidates truly considered.

(1) Be prepared to explain why you want that position and why you want to work for that company or organization.

(2) Be prepared to explain why they should hire you. (That includes anticipating objections they may have about your qualifications for the position.)

Keep in mind, you will be answering these questions across the whole interview (especially the second one), whether or not they are explicitly asked.
