I am currently underemployed in manufacturing. My job is absolutely hurting me. My back hurts from standing in one place for 8 hours. It get so bad by the end of the 8 hours, that I can barely walk. Next week, I have to start working 54 hours a week, 10 hour shifts.

It seems like if I work any job that requires standing in one place for a long time, I end up with severe back pain. I am fine as long as I can walk around or sit down.

I am beginning to think I am screwed because all the jobs available now are low-paying cashier type jobs where you stand in one place all the time. I wish I could find a dang career where there were actually jobs. I would start training tomorrow, if I weren't afraid of not finding a job after the training is over.

Have you spoken to HR? There's labor laws in play here. Your employer has to accommodate your disabilities. What did your doctor say about your back pain?

That sounds a lot like spinal stenosis. Can you not get some sort of disability benefit for that? It's quite easy to prove by getting an MRI done; it's the narrowing of the spinal canal. Either way, you need to see a back specialist for that.

I assume as is routine in mfg, you are getting 1 or 2 breaks, plus lunch. I'd strongly advise taking a walk during 10-15 minutes of lunch, and taking a shorter walk during 1 break. Whatever you do, do NOT spend all of the break time sitting.

There are two things you can buy to help ease your back pain. Get some orthotics for your shoes or Dr. Scholls gel inserts. Those helped me a lot with my cashiering job. You could also look into getting a back brace. It made a world of a difference for my dad in his manufacturing job, and for me in middle school when I was the butt of Betsy the cow in a production of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Drive a truck. You shouldn't have to worry about standing for a long period of time.

What kind of manufacturing do you do? There are a lot of aerospace manufacturing jobs in this area... but if you manufacture Christmas wrapping paper for Hallmark it probably wouldn't count as relevant experience.

I will see a doctor here in about three weeks. That is the soonest I can get in.
