In May I completed a B.S. in GIS and have been exploring possible career opportunities in geospatial sciences. I would like to learn more about CompanyX and the responsibilities of a GIS/Remote Sensing professional. I am wondering if you or one of your colleges would be willing to conduct an informational interview?
Why not go for the "kill" instead of beating around the bush?
Say, "I am interested in any potential opportunities in your organization and am open to any opportunities for a discussion on how my education & experiences could benefit your firm."

It's obvious that I'm looking for a job. I feel like bringing it up might bring out a bad vibe
i think you're more likely to get a response (although you should realize that it's not likely you'll get a response in any case) if you stick with your plan of asking for an informational interview (and treating it as such, not as a back door to a job interview) rather than asking about job opportunities. i haven't heard about many people getting jobs that way, at least not from a cold e-mail through linkedin.
It is one way to "get in the door".
Probably not used as much as in better times but in some fields, experts like to be consulted.
People/companies who would consider it a waste of time probably don't offer their field as a whole much except "doing their job."
Brush up on your own interviewing techniques as well, they may turn the tables on you.
This Happened to me once.
Also, even if they say "we have no openings currently" a stock answer in some places, insist you just want to learn about future prospects whatever.
