I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on this question/concern.
My wife is an independent contract for this small PR firm. Last year she filled out a 1099. We filed jointly.
It came to light recently while reviewing last year's tax returns my social was listed as being self employed under Schedule C. This was not correct since my wife is the one who is self employed. I called my accountant and he fixed the problem on his end but my concern is how will this affect her looking for a full time job? Another words, if she applies to a full time job will her contract job show up on a background check in the event she is offered the job?
Is this something we should be concerned about? Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Contract work rarely shows up on the automated employment verifications, unless it was through an agency (even then it's very rare for 1099 to appear).
I recently had to prove self employment. One of the forms that I could have submitted, if I had it, was a 1099. As I'm actually a sole proprietor and not an independent contractor I submitted my state sales tax cert and dba.
A professionally prepared tax return was also an option. These things don't show up in a regular background check, but if its part of your history on your resume you have to be able to probe that you're not just filling a gap by saying you're an ic or se.
