A Michigan man who was fired by Wal-Mart after he defended a woman who was attacked in a store parking lot during his meal break has been offered his job back, the company said on Friday.
Kristopher Oswald, 30, who worked at a Walmart store in Hartland Township, located northwest of Detroit, was dismissed on Sunday for violating company policy, company spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said.
What a weird policy. The guy was on his break, assuming the company does not pay employees for their breaks, why do they still have to follow company policy? The only reason Wal-Mart is offering to re-hire him is because of all the media uproar.
"The protocol is when you do see something, you alert store management and call the police. That's in place for the safety of our associates so they don't feel compelled to get into a situation that may be dangerous,"
It's idiotic policies like these that Wal-Mart should revise. No tolerance policies, and especially how they are enforced, are comical.
How is he obligated to follow "policy" if he's on break? Getting the manager for stealing is one thing, but to suggest he should have gone into the store to get a manager when somebody was being attacked right in front of him is silly.
The rehire is based on the bad PR they created for themselves, nothing else. I hope the guy ends up with a good job somewhere else.
Absolutely, WM found egg on their face when this story aired and decided to do damage control. The man is a human first and a WM employee second, and he did a great thing by helping a lady who needed it. I bet he is flooded with offers for a job and a better one than working at WM !

Me too. My guess is that he will.
And if they guy didn't do anything, there would be a news story/complaints about Wal-Mart/their employees not doing anything. Wasn't there a story on the news not too long ago about a bus driver who called in a fight between two boys? And people were complaining because he didn't intervene or try to separate them even though policy said he didn't have to and just had to alert someone.
Again, our society focuses on the letter of the law - what they technically have to do or not do - vs. actually doing what is right. That's what led to this poor guy getting fired and what led to that bus driver being too fearful to do anything about the bully punks attacking that other student. It's a sad situation.
