So I'm doing an astrophysics major from one of the top universities in the country (lol as if this even matters anymore) and yet I keep getting humiliated by these seemingly easy psychometric tests.
Even on practice tests I can rarely get above 80% both on the online verbal and numerical aptitude tests. But those are just practice tests. In the real ones after I apply to jobs and internships, I just keep failing one after the other as they are WAY harder. And since most of these companies don't disclose your actual results I never have a clue as to what I keep doing wrong. You would expect some improvement after numerous attempts but damn, I just can't seem to handle these tests especially when they expect you to do several questions in a very short time with an average 20 seconds per question! Seriously, who are these people actually trying to recruit?? Albert Einsteins for even a frikkin data entry job??
Its ridiculously frustrating considering the fact I go through such great lengths and detail to answer all those motivational questions and tailoring my cover letter and resume for each application, only to be rejected later by the tests.
The only tests I actually do well at are the logical reasoning ones with the shape puzzles. I can normally get above average in them. But I guess thats not enough...
Since virtually every company uses these psychometric tests, I'm starting to think whether there is no hope for me to get a job or internship at all after graduation? What other avenues do I have which offers some job security, if any? Or should I just take out more loans and consider further study in higher education?
Thanks and I appreciate your inputs here or via PM.
I'm confused. What kind of tests are you encountering. Are they the Wonderlic test? Psychometric tests are usually stuff like I prefer to go to a party rather than hang out at home alone. strongly agree/agree/disagree/strongly disagree

good question, to me it sounds more like GRE type tests than personality/job fit type tests.
I learned long ago, any job that requires you to take a test before any sort of interview means they have HUNDREDS of people applying and they are trying to weed people out. I'm a smart person, I average test scores in the 80s and have never been called back. I stopped wasting my time after that.
I don't know what field you are in, but I'd look to other places.

I'm stumped by this question/dilemma. How can you be an astrophysics major at any university and have trouble with these types of tests? You're majoring in one of the toughest subjects in academia, employers would expect you to be able to handle tough assignments.
what type of jobs are you applying to that are asking you to take these types of tests?
Mainly entry level analyst type jobs in Science, engineering, banking and finance.
I also try to network a lot at my university but so far people either ignore my requests or say that they don't have enough power to put in a good word for me...

Agreed. Those tests are annoying. I remembered taking a 120 question test once.
