on one hand people will tell you that it's easier to find a new job if you're already employed - don't have the 'out of work' syndrome working against you. on the other hand, isn't it easier to devote the necessary time to finding a new job while you are not working? plenty of time to call recruiters, schedule a phone screen and/or actually interview, etc. while working, you obviously have to take time off from your current job to go on an interview which could start looking suspicious to your employer if you have say 3 or 4 interviews in a 3-4 week period. so what's the best way to handle the interviewing while working dilemma? request all interviews take place at the start or end of the business day (come in late after or leave early before)? request to wear business casual as opposed to a suit so it doesn't look as suspicious at the office (you can say you had a wake to go to)?
It's not easy but it can be done. Try and schedule an interview in the morning or late afternoon and you say you have a doctor's appt. Now you can't have too many of those or your boss and coworkers start to suspect something.
You make all your phone calls on your cell away from your office.
I wouldn't ask about wearing business casual to an interview. You can change your clothes, I did it once. Wore the suit and than changed to casual clothes as it was a Friday.
Doctor's appointments, dentist appointment, yearly physical, need to take the car to the mechanic shop, etc.
Yup make phone calls away, even if you have to step outside and if asked who it was say family and family emergency. In fact I have a coworker in the past month has had two family emergencies that I suspect are job interviews lol- but more power to him!
And yes, change clothes! I have even changed in my car if I had to. And then changed back before going to work. Never had an issue
I actually prefer this scenario here's why......you have the power you are already employed so just be direct and tactful about what you want and expect. Don't beat around the bush like you would if you are unemployed.
Qualify, qualify, qualify.
1. How much is the range of pay?
2. What are the benefits?
3. Can you telecommute?
Basically interview them and qualify if it's worth your time.
I had one call me when I was employed, it looked sketchy, and I did a google street view and they were running their business from a run down warehouse or run down home so I just told the recruiter what's the deal with these folks........start up biz because it looks run down. BTW this is a line of biz where you bring customers in to demo high tech hardware so looks do matter. The recruiter called the company and they got defensive saying they were a new biz so I said why would I leave a somewhat stable job for something so shaky? Basically WIFM? And the answer was basically nothing.

What I did was dress biz casual for work, hang suit in car where no one else parked, and changed in hotel lobby restroom.

Why lie and claim doctor's appointments, car to the shop, etc? I have always just told my supervisor that I needed to leave early because I had a 3:00 appointment. An interview at a scheduled time is an appointment.
I don't know, maybe I am just weird but it would bother my conscience to lie to get time off work.
1/ Do phone screens first (I do them in my car, away from the office).
2/ If the phone interview goes well, I would proceed with the in-person interview.
3/ I usually schedule then for late afternoon (after 2 PM or 3 PM).
4/ Good luck!

They are going to figure it out. And certainly if you never had a bunch of generic "appointments" before. As far as I'm concerned this one falls under the "little white lie" category.
