Anyone working at an IT services company? How is it? I'm currently working in Accenture Manila and I am migrating soon to the US. The stress is ok since IT is very fast evolving but I just wanna know how is it working in the US in this kind of industry. Is it a good move to continue looking for a job in this industry?

Accenture - consulting?

Pace will depend on industry/client. I did information assurance for a mgmt consulting firm. My clients were mainly in the Federal government, so the pace was very nice. However, you still have a lot of business development tasks behind the scenes. Some of my colleagues that supported commercial clients were basically unseen during the week. They were either traveling, or churning deliverables out.

I think if you have the interest in staying abreast of technology, a service provider will certainly help. You'll always be on top of the latest and greatest as that's what you'll be selling/implementing. That said, there will be less time to just enjoy the scenery. So I guess it also depend on what part of the career you're in. The earlier, the better.

Is Accenture sponsoring you? If you have to get a new sponsor, it will be difficult.

Sorry, my generic term for - Vendors, *aaS companies, tech service consultants, etc. Basically anyone that provides technical expertise.

The company will depend on your background/interests. Certainly if you're into networking/unified communications, Cisco is a great company to work for. But you can also work for a VAR or integrator that specializes in that stuff, or consulting (project management, compliance, process overhauls, etc.). Again, I don't know your background, so not sure if any of that would help.

I'm a software engineer here at ACN manila and have been exposed to unix and peoplesoft so I guess that's what I can start looking for. I don't know the difference of stress levels of IT in the US and here in Manila but I can say that I'm currently feeling it here. I am working on the tech side and on-call on weekends are starting to bug me. I'm looking for companies that are worth the stress, better if they can offer excellent work-life balance. I mean I love being on the tech side but I am just starting to hate it working extra over the weekends and even long hours on weekdays. I feel that it'll slowly kill me long term.

Can't provide any data on Manila vs. U.S. But I think it all comes down to what you actually do, what projects you work on, and how you manage your clients/managers/colleagues. You'll find the full gamut of environments/cultures here. Some are organization based, and some will be down to the project you work on.

Maybe just try and do an internal transfer first to an Accenture group in the States? Perhaps that in itself will provide enough change to help.

Every IT job I have been involved with includes weekend and holiday work. Its just the nature of the business. Usually those are the times that businesses can afford to have down time for one reason or the other.

I think that's the downside of a great paying career. I am considering switching careers but I think it's kinda hard these days especially how hard it is to find a job.
