Interesting situation. I applied for a job a few months ago, but by the time I found the listing and submitted my resume, the job had been filled. It was a job I really wanted so I was disappointed when I was too late applying.
A month or so later, the same company had another job opening that I wasn't qualified for, but they had my resume on file and called me in to meet with them anyway. They liked me a lot, but my experience for that position was lacking, so no offer.
A couple more months passed, and this past Monday, same company, first job that I am qualified for was posted again. For whatever reason, the person who beat me to the job, is gone..!
I immediately resubmitted my resume and got a call a day later to come in and interview. He said they remembered me, liked my resume, and wanted to talk, so off I went.
We had a pleasant interview, which ended with them sending me straight from his office to a testing facility for a drug test, and said they were going to proceed with a background check..
Sounds good so far, but..
He said he wasn't offering me the job, as they have a couple of other interviews to do before making a decision, and they would let me know in a week or so????
Are they playing games? Spending the money to drug test me and do a background check, but no job offer? I can't imagine they would drug test everyone who interviews, it's the strangest thing I have ever heard of...
My only thought would be they want the results of the drug test before making an offer, but usually a company would say we are offering you the position depending on the results of the test. I have no fear of a drug test, don't drink, smoke, or do drugs. My only vice is milkshakes..!!
Now I have to attempt to sleep at night for however long it take them to contact me one way or another.
Thoughts anyone? Did I get the job??

if you got the job... you might be disappointed with the pay... since they didn't discuss it with you before offering you the job, normally both of them go together... Never got a job offer without knowing the pay/benefits at the same time. You can't even negotiate without knowing what they offered

They didn't offer me the job, pay was discussed, but no job offer.. They asked if I would be willing to start at my current pay rate where I am now employed, with a possible raise after three months, and I agreed to that.
I will save at least $250.00 per month that I now spend for fuel, so that is a sizable raise right there, not to mention my daily commute will be reduced from 2-3 hours depending on traffic conditions, down to 20-25 minutes max. Saves gas, saves my vehicle, saves my mental health. etc, that is why I wanted the job so badly, I've had it with the freeway and traffic.
But no official job offer, before sending me to the lab, they said they had other interviews to conduct and would let me know next week. Very strange... Why would they drug test me if they still plan to conduct other interviews for the position? There is only for one opening.
I guess I'll know in a week or so....
Just wondered if anyone has ever heard of such a thing before.. I will report back when I find out, one way or another.

In this situation I would maintain a positive attitude since the company wants me to complete a drug test and criminal background. If anyone is confident they can pass both then I see no reason why someone shouldn't feel good about their chances of getting the job.
