I applied for a position in January of this year, had one interview, was scheduled for a second interview, but cancelled because a friend was going to be living with me for a month after his surgery. I thanked them for scheduling a second interview, but said I needed to withdraw my application due to a family issue.

I just checked and saw that a position with the same description has been reposted, but under a different name.

Should I just apply again or should I email the interviewer/director for the department and ask her if it's the same type of position and that I am interested?

Employers/internal-external recruiters do not have much room in their heart for people who cancel a follow-up interview.......just so you know. Was it Lincoln who was said to have walked thirty miles in the snow to get to school? Employers/Recruiters have little sympathy for those who derail them by not appearing to be able to overcome most any obstacles that come their way. Not fair but it is what it is.

If you apply online, you might get missed entirely but if you contact the same people with whom you spoke before, you would be recognized/remembered.

Go straight to the person hiring for the position. Presumably that refers to the "director for the department".

Address the Director, saying you and s/he met in January for the ______________ position.

Let that person know you saw the _______________ position being advertised and that your family situation is resolved and you would like very much to stop by and pick up where you left off.

Then say something to the effect of:

"As you may recall, we spoke about how my specific experience regarding/doing this and that matched up with the job requirement that this and that get done."

Fill in the blanks, use two bullets at most, keep it short and hopefully that will remind that Director why s/he wanted you to come back for that second interview.

Don't be surprised if you get no response.

But trying to contact someone directly is worth a shot.

If you don't do it you know you won't get the job, right?

Chance of success is probably low but I would follow up via email with the same individuals you were in contact with (Do not apply online again). Just don't expect a response and keep it moving for other positions.

If you know exactly who to contact (i.e. you know the hiring manager's name) then go ahead, it is worth a try to contact them. Don't go through the recruiter because this recruiter is probably a different one than the one you had before (and they don't know your situation and may not present you properly).
