Just had a guy turn down employment with the company I work for because he was told he wouldn't be allowed to smoke while he worked. He would be allowed to smoke (outside in the designated areas) on breaks, but couldn't smoke while he was actually at his work station.

So he declined the job offer.

I'm sure they could turn him in to U/E, but they won't bother. How many companies allow employees to smoke while working?

haha... Apparently it used to be like that in the Navy. Luckily that was WAY before my days. Ugh...

But yeah, people are idiots.

i know of no companies that let you smoke. in fact alot of companies have even done away with designated smoking areas. that guy just didnt want to work. what i want to know is how does he afford the cigarettes?

All the people doing road construction here smoke. I feel 'sort of sorry' for them standing around in the elements with STOP signs but they just puff and puff away..

It's just distasteful. Tell your applicant Smokey to get up to Vermont and hold a road sign for 8 hours a day and he can smoke all he wants.

Aside from drug tests, I think employers should do brain scans. Something is truly messed up with this person's thinking!

He must be a chain-smoker! I smoke, but I know there is such a thing as breaks!

Back in the 80's to the early 90's, I worked at a couple of companies where I could smoke at my desk, that was until California did away with smoking in the workplace in 1997 - and I had to go outside after that.

He found a job, he just didn't want it. Is that a crime?

I applaud him for sticking up for what he wants and not settling. I wish more of us did it.

It is if he continues to collect unemployment after being offered suitable employment. Not being able to smoke does not disqualify the job from being suitable.

So what you're saying as far as you know he's done nothing illegal and your post title is misleading. Ok just checking.

Why is the title misleading?

He can't find a job because no employer is going to allow him to smoke while he's working at the type of work he does.
