I am now on the THIRD interview for this job. Is that usually a good sign? Or a sign they can't make up their mind? I had two in person interviews and now a phone interview Friday or Tuesday. The most interviews I have ever had to go thru for one position is 2 (one phone and one in person) Its nerve racking!! My unemployment ends next week because of the extensions ending so beweteen the house going back and forth on when to vote and this my nerves are shot!!

Four including two phone interviews.

It started with a phone interview with a recruiter. Then I did a phone interview with the hiring manager. Than an in-person interview with the hiring manager. Then an in-person interview with the hiring-managers boss. I didn't get the job, it was down to me and another candidate, and the other candidate had experience in that exact industry. It was disappointing, but I understood.

well for one company i'm currently pursuing, i've gone through this goat rope (so far on a span of a month and 2 wks):

- initial interview at a conference
- brought onboard for a 2nd interview on site with several senior executive level people
- feedback was positive but they felt i was too junior for the role but they wanted to consider me for another position that was open
- initial interview on phone
- tomorrow i have a "2nd interview" over the phone... not sure if that's the last one though.

for this company, i am still currently "still in the running" but i'm sure they understand that the longer a candidate is strung along for the ride, the higher the probability that they may be looking elsewhere or toward the stages of getting an offer from a different company. we all know that employers, especially in this tight job market and economy, can take all the time they want to find that best fit candidate. however, from the jobseeker perspective, we all have the option to make sure the employer is who we want to work for too and that the company is the right fit for us.

typically the longer you are in the running doing interviews, i'd say one or more of these are true:

1. the company is doing initial screenings for the position to see who else might be a possible candidate when they advertised the position

2. they're holding onto you because you meet the requirements but they also want to completely exhaust all avenues to ensure there are no other "better" candidates out there before they make a decision (with the candidate/applicant pool that exists out there, this is very common)

3. there was something that had been brought up/discussed during the interview that raised flags

4. they're doing background, reference, and credit checks on you that's taking longer than expected

either way though, it's better to still be in the running than not!

I'm guessing it could be one or two. If they had to run credit checks and such I think they would do that first before wasting all this time interviewing. At least I hope because to put me thru all this when my credit is awful!! I would never pass (yeah unemployment!! )
They told me yesterday morning they were making the decsion yesterday afternoon so my guess is they have already picked me and just want this last person to ok it (she is the director of the company) or they are undecided over several canidates so she will break the tie.

i certainly hope it goes well for you and that you hear good new!!

generally employers do a credit check and/or background check when they're about to extend an offer out. they just want to make sure that everything is good before they give out an offer to a candidate.

Three (Two phone and one in-person) for a job that I didn't get.
They wasted hours of my time and paid me about $325 for my expenses to drive to the interview.
Why bother?

I had one where I had two interviews once. All the rest were one timers.

I have never had an interview where I wasn't offered a job. Thinking about it take the time to interview and not get an offer would really tick me off.

Because they were probably interested in a couple of people and one was just slightly better than you.

We jsut hired someone and paid for travel expenses for the two finalists for an in-person interview. We knew we'd only be hiring one of them, but up until the point of the in-person interview we really weren't sure which would be the successful candidate. If the person who wasn't successful feels like it was a waste of their time, so be it. Life isn't always fair.

Three. I was supposed to go in for a 4th, but they decided to hire from within. That was 3 interviews plus a few hours of extensive paperwork/testing. It wasn't even a government job!
