I noticed that on Comcast in my area features the Chabad Lubavitch telethon (for their education and social service programs on the West Coast.

The thought that struck me is that Hassidic households are not supposed to watch tv, or am I wrong?

The one Chassid I knew told me that Chassids love technology, but this was mainly related to computers/website so they can reach out to other Jews. I'm not sure about TV, though. Good question - hopefully someone will answer.

There's no single consistent psak (halachic ruling) when it comes to a religious Yid watching tv. We are commanded by the Torah to not watch forbidden images, of which tv is full of them, but I know many frum yid's with tv's. We have a tv, and we Netflix leave it to Beaver for our kids, for instance. Don't laugh.

For most frum yidden, they ask their rav for guidance. I'm not Lubavitch, so not sure how their rebbeim hold.

Thanks for the answer; I was interested too. Definitely not laughing here. I don't listen to my car radio - the stuff they have on it is beyond belief. We show Gomer Pyle, I Dream of Jeannie, I Love Lucy, Gilligan's Island for my 14 and 7 year olds. People say we're crazy; they can think what they want. We don't have or watch "regular" TV at all; it's all taped shows. I haven't seen a commercial in about 5 years.

Thank you, flipflop.

I was thinking a bit more and B&H in New York would not exist if there were not strictly Orthodox people watching tv. I can't believe that they are selling so much electronic equipment without actually using them.

I read some books once which told of a guy sneaking a tv into the house late at night so the neighbors would not see. It was cute.

You seem to be assuming that Chabad fundraising is mostly aimed at Chabad households. Wherever did you get that idea? I think they get more of their $$ from nostalgic non-orthodox Jews.

AFAIK even most the folks who will not watch broadcast TV will allow DVDs that have received approval from their rabbis.

using the net is pretty borderline, but they definitely love their cell phones.
