"A medieval sculpture of Jews engaged in obscene acts with a pig appears on the facade of a historical German church where Martin Luther preached. On Tuesday, a court rejected a Jewish man's efforts to remove the offensive sculpture." (Click on link below to read full article)

EDIT: If you choose to participate in the poll and don't mind giving your reason for your choice, I'd be interested in it. I haven't participated in this poll (yet).

EDIT 2: Okay, who chose the "mooning" retaliation? LOL

I got banned here for 3 days when I got excited to see the Notre Dame burn. Mida keneged mida (measure for measure for all the Torah’s and Gamaras burned there). So now I’m reformed and voted to leave the German church as it is.

Good for you, TFF. No more church burning.

I don't know if I'd be as tolerant of that sculpture, though, if I lived in that town and had to walk past it everyday. I'm kind of surprised that the Christians there don't at least object to the fact that it's practically pornographic -- and it's gracing the outside of their church. Crazy, IMO.

Take down the sculpture and smash it to bits. is my choice, because I find anything that permits the continuation of stereotypes(Jews and others) deeply offensive besides the fact that it gives food to the haters.
In fact I might remove the first five words of the choice.

I hear you, JaiSea. Especially since this sort of sculpture appeared on a lot of medieval churches throughout Germany and contributed to the antisemitic sentiment that gave rise to the Third Reich.

But if a Jew were to take it upon himself to damage a Christian church (as in smashing that sculpture to bits), what kind of repercussions do you suppose that might have for the Jewish people?

My choice is one that I didn't include in the poll. I would work to convince the Christian members of that church to take down that sculpture, themselves. It may take a very long time to accomplish, but I don't think it's impossible.

Well, that is true. I just felt really angry when I read that.
However I did say might.

I vote for taking it down. I am horrified that the church pastor wants to keep it up (and glad to see that the bishop does not).

Put it in a museum so that others can see what hatred does.

In The Cloisters museum in New York City is a 12th-century cross made of walrus ivory, known as The Bury St. Edmund's Cross. There tiny figurines carved on it relating to Bible stories, but there are also anti-Semitic inscriptions. That fact is pointed out in every discussion about the cross (there's actually an entire book about the piece, which has a history of disappearance and intrigue behind it.)

If you destroy the image, you destroy that history, and then you forget that history. Use it to educate, either where it is or in a museum.

Luther was an anti-Semite, and should have no statue.

I've visited the Cloisters museum lots of times and I never knew that! I'll have to look for it next time (if they have it on exhibit).

I think it's good that things like this wind up in museums, so that history is never white-washed. I recently visited the Cloisters museum to view their exhibit of the Colmar Treasure and the accompanying story of the 14th century massacre of the Jews in that town.

Anyway, your reaction as a Christian to these antisemitic representations is exactly what I was talking about. I believe that there are a lot of other good and educated people like you, MQ, who are not necessarily Jewish and who are repulsed by these things and inclined to speak out about them.
