I was born in KC and grew up in Missouri and really miss the Midwest, hoping to come back soon!! I lived near Columbia when we were there, so I'm not very familiar with the KC area & suburbs. I may have a job opportunity at KC Research Medical Center. I have a husband and a 7 & 8 year old son. My husband will be looking for work in the electronic engineering tech field once he graduates in a few months from his online program.

I am wondering about the best neighborhoods/suburbs within 20 min or so of this facility?

Things that are important to us are good schools, safety, nature (parks, etc), etc., and nice but affordable homes.

Basically, just wondering the overall best areas you would suggest families to look if someone works at that hospital!

Thank you!!

I’d say Lee’s Summit. A little further out (probably a bit more than 20 minutes) with a little cheaper real estate, Blue Springs. Both have good schools.

Brookside and Waldo and many parts of south KC are easily within 20 minutes. Maybe some parts of Prairie Village and northern Leawood as well.

I will look them up. Thanks for the suggestions!

Budget? What's your definition of affordable? Based on you and your husband's occupation it does seem to you two could afford a wide range of homes but since it seems that he's just starting out I'm unsure. Would go with Northern Johnson County (Northern Overland Park or Shawnee) or Parkville, MO. Would not go with Lee's Summit or Blue Springs. That's like a 30 minutes drive without traffic.

melissahall456 - I would even suggest Grandview, MO, which is about 20 miles south of Kansas City. My wife and I and our 2 dogs and 2 cats rented a house there. Affordable living - and we were about a quarter mile from Highway 49/71, which heads south to Belton and Harrison, MO, and north in to the city of Kansas City, MO.

Sure, you can find nicer neighborhoods, but we don't know your budget. The neighbors were friendly and there were parks for recreation near the Grandview Rec.Center and different nearby areas as well. Lee's Summit is more upscale but the commute you'll have is a bit further to Research Hospital in town. Just some things to think about. I wouldn't cross Grandview out - it has some nice neighborhoods with nicer houses in it plus even some more rural parts as it's border extends west towards Martin City.

Good fortune to you guys - I think you'll like Kansas City. My job took me out of town but I've been offered the same job back since I got Registered in my medical field a little over 2 years ago. If the need arose I would definitely move back to KC. Probably the most efficient freeway system I have ever seen and lots of fun things ta do in Kansas City.

Sorry I thought you meant KU Medical Center not KC Research. Yes Lee's Summit is a fine choice.

Thank you! I'm an RN and my husband will soon be an electronics engineering tech. I'll keep these places in mind. It is just a travel nurse position at the time to get us there. I'm concerned about my kids being in a school when I have never even visited the area, so I'll definitely research these places.
