Planning to go from Chicago to Denver sometime, west through Iowa and Nebraska on the way there, east through Kansas and Missouri on the way back. I'd be leaving Denver and driving all the way to Kansas City for my next hotel stay. Topeka is obviously a big city, but is pretty close to Kansas City. I know there aren't a whole lot of densely populated areas along 70, but Hays and Salina look like some good places to stop for gas, food, etc. Anything cool to look out for on the highway, and any attractions not too far off 70 to take a little break and do sightseeing? I know my time is limited, and I couldn't possibly see everything on one quick drive through. Thanks!

S.P. Dinsmoor's Garden of Eden in Lucas is worth a visit.

Newly Remodeled Capitol building in Topeka. Only capitol in the US where one can go to the top of the dome. Free tours.

Eisenhower Presidential Library. You can do a quick self guided tour, not sure the cost.

Castle Rock west of Hays. Quick free stop. In that town, I believe in Quinter is an old-fashioned pharmacy that serves old fashioned pop. Fun stop as well.

When I make that trip I always gas up in Goodland from Denver going east. Its only three hours but it gets me a full tank to make it into Topeka-Lawrence-or Kansas city for my next stop. Salina is okay but its mostly a shopping city not much to see.
