Highlands Prehistoric Museum will be closing its Cookeville site permanently on Thursday, Dec. 31, to move to a new location in Kingsport. Since opening in June, the museum has attracted about 3,800 guests, but that has not been enough support to make remaining in the area a possibility. According to museum owner Jerry Jacene, many residents still do not know about the museum -- eight out of 10 visitors have come from outlying areas, not Cookeville. Those who do come in are often surprised at what they find.

I am very excited about this! It will be great for Kingsport to get such a museum and I believe this gentleman will boost the Gray fossil museum too. There should be another similar announcement soon too that complements this one. 2010 for Kingsport is gonna be even better than 2009.

That's wonderful for Kingsport and a great opportunity for the museum owners, but a HUGE bummer for my family and others in the Nashville area. Cookeville is just a hour's drive from here; a quick trip for my 9 year-old future paleontologist to get her dinosaur fix. We're heading to the museum this week to get one last visit in before the move since we'll rarely be able to drive 5 hours one way to Kingsport.
