Moving to Knoxville from Honolulu, HI to start a PhD at UTK in mid-August. I'm interested in living in the greater downtown area to include the old city, 4th and Gill, and possibly Old North Knoxville. I'd like to live in a one bedroom or studio loft or older, well-kept/restored building. Can anyone recommend other places to look besides Craigslist? Any information to better inform this big move would be much appreciated!

To my knowledge there are no apartments in the old city. Slightly east of downtown, but it's not a great area. Here are apartments in the UT area and in north Knoxville - probably north of where you want to be, but south of 640.

Yes, there are apartments in the Old City. JFG lofts is the most recently renovated building. There are a couple of condo complexes that might have rentals, Hewgley park & Fire street lofts. Occasional condos & apartments over stores.
