Hello,

I am joining Oak Ridge National Lab next month for one year for my postdoc research. I am looking for a place to live near Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) and find possible ways of transportation to ORNL from Oak Ridge/Knoxville city. I was never been in the USA and I don't have international driving licence right now. It would be great if you could suggest any possible places to live nearby ORNL and means of transportation to ORNL. Thank you all.

I would check with your contact at ORNL to see if they have "internal classifieds" where employees can advertise housing to other employees. This area is pretty car-dependent.

Default ORNL transportation

I don't have any advice on transportation to the lab. I can tell you there is no nearby housing. The city of Oak Ridge is about 10 miles from the lab. There are many internationals at the lab in the summer, so it wouldn't surprise me if there is a shuttle service of some sort from Oak Ridge to the lab.

I would search airbnb for a host who is willing to do a long-term rental. For transportation, you may have to use Uber or Lyft until you find a coworker who will take you for a small gas fee.

I'm curious, Buntymou ... did you find an answer to transportation? I have wondered how temporary hires get around there, especially when they are international.

While there are people who commute from Oak Ridge town to the lab by bike, it is not a trivial undertaking, especially in bad weather. At best it will be 7-10 miles one way (over 10 km at a minimum). While roads on the lab are wide, many roads to get to the labs gates are not...and alas many/most drivers are not careful around bikes. There is no shuttle service between Oak Ridge and the lab.

There is a shuttle service (free bus) between downtown Knoxville (University of Tennessee) and the lab. That might actually be a better location for living and enjoying life during your post-doc.

You should update your license before you arrive here. And then plan on getting a car.

Sorry--it is pathetic how hard it is to get around this and many other towns in the US. But that is our current situation.
