Hello Everyone. I have been always a reader here but today I am posting my first thread. I am looking to move to Knoxville in a couple of months and have been doing some research about the area. Looks like its a great place to live (I am from Atlanta Suburbs). Can someone post a few neighborhoods around UT Knoxville Medical Center? I will be working there so I would like to either rent or purchase a house within a 5 mile radius.

Also if there are any other recommendations then please feel free to post. Once again thank you so much!

If you are interested in condos you might want to look at Cherokee Bluffs. There are some nice houses off of Maloney Road and in Martha Washington Hts off of Alcoa Hwy. What is your price range? Good luck on the new job; are you going to work there as a Nurse? You are going to love the area!! Welcome to the forum

Hey fastlearner, congrats on your moving to big orange country. You do realize, you have to start wearing the orange colors? ha ha, just teasing. As Smoky said, we have plenty of places, depending on if you want a house, condo, and prices will help us, with where to reccomend. The Cherokee area is great, as well as Cumberland estate area, Sq Hills, and with the interstate system, you can easily find a lot more, within minutes. Also , the Alcoa Hwy area, has several places to choose, and once we know your price range, can help even more. Good luck.

Wow such positive responses. Once again I have to say thank you. I am still trying to decide since different locations have different price ranges. I would like to keep it under 140K because I don't know much about the area. I tried looking online but it's hard to find places if you don't know the area. I want to make sure its close to the hospital for obvious reasons but that's not a must.

As far as renting a place, if there are good options there then please let me know. I want to make sure I don't end up ina place with "interesting" neighbors Don't want to hear police sirens at night lol.

I will start looking up the places you guys have mentioned already

Well the "interesting neighbors" will be in the area immediately surrounding the hospital. It's unlikely you'll find anything under 140K in Lakemoor hills, but you might in the older sections of Martha Washington heights if it needs updating. Or around Woodson drive close to Alcoa Hwy.

Cherokee Bluff Condos is a great compromise. It is high up on a bluff isolated from the interesting neighbors and the student condos. Very close to the hospital.

Thanks for the honest opinion. What kind of rent range are we talking about?

fastlearner - knowing a bit more about you helps! The area off of Maloney Road is probably a bit higher than you want to pay so I would mark that area off your list. I think that you might have the right idea to lease or rent first and then, after you get your bearings here, decide where to purchase. There are plenty of rentals around and this will allow you to explore all areas of the city. UTMC is centrally located and there are so many options on areas in which to live.

Thanks SmokyMtnGal. I have never rented in my life got my first house when I was 18 so its kind of interesting at this point in my life where I am trying to rent. Hopefuly I will be able to find a decent place. Can you throw a number on how much rent I should expect to pay for a 2bd condo or apt?

There are several real estate agents on the board and I am sure that they can help us out here and give us some figures that are actually data driven. I am not into real estate and I fear that my suggestion would be anecdotal at best. I hear you about renting vs owning but Knoxville is so diverse that you will have a wonderful time exploring and finding your perfect location.

Just a wild guess that the condos would be around $800 -900. Nicer 2 br apartments but not deluxe would be 650-800.
